SQLite is the quiet counterargument to "move fast and break things." A handful of developers maintain a database used by billions of devices, with a testing regime — 100% branch coverage, simulated OS crashes, fuzzing — that most Fortune 500 engineering orgs couldn't replicate. It ships, it doesn't break, and it has outlived most of its competitors.
Engineering notes
- Testing as a religion. The project famously maintains far more test code than production code, including tests that simulate power loss mid-transaction.
- Backwards compatibility as a contract. Database files written decades ago still open. The team treats format stability as a promise, not a preference.
- Single-file deployment. The entire engine amalgamates into one C file — embedding a real SQL database becomes a build-system non-event.
Limitations
- One writer at a time — write-heavy server workloads belong on client/server databases.
- No built-in replication or user management; it's a library, not a service.
