Aider
AI pair programming in your terminal — open source.
What it does
Why it matters
Before the big labs shipped CLIs, Aider proved the terminal-agent pattern worked — and did it open source, model-agnostic, and git-native. It remains the most transparent option: you see every diff, you pick the model, you own the loop. For developers who want agents without platform lock-in, it's the default answer.
Engineering notes
- Git-native workflow. Every change is a proper diff; commits are generated with sensible messages. The version control integration isn't an afterthought.
- Model-agnostic. Works with Claude, GPT, Gemini, local models — benchmark your own stack instead of accepting a vendor's choice.
- Repomap. Compresses your codebase into a map the model can reason over — a clever solution to the context-window problem that predates most competitors' approaches.
Limitations
- Terminal-only; no GUI for those who want one.
- You bring your own API keys — costs are yours to manage.
- Less hand-holding than commercial tools; expects you to know your way around.

uv
An extremely fast Python package and project manager, written in Rust.
uv replaces pip, pip-tools, pipx, poetry, pyenv, and virtualenv with a single binary that resolves and installs Python dependencies 10–100x faster. It's the rare tool that deletes an entire category of workflow friction.
Bun
An all-in-one JavaScript runtime, bundler, test runner, and package manager.
Bun collapsed the Node.js toolchain — runtime, transpiler, bundler, test runner, package manager — into a single Zig binary that's dramatically faster at nearly everything. Cohesion as a performance strategy.
