Bun

An all-in-one JavaScript runtime, bundler, test runner, and package manager.

What it does

Why it matters

JavaScript tooling had become a Jenga tower: Node plus esbuild plus vitest plus pnpm, each with its own config and failure modes. Bun bet that one team owning the whole stack could delete entire classes of friction — and that a from-scratch runtime in Zig could outrun V8-based Node at I/O-heavy work.

Engineering notes

  • One binary, whole toolchain. bun install, bun test, bun build, bunx — no version-matrix archaeology.
  • Node compatibility as a feature. Implements Node's APIs so existing code runs, while the faster paths (Bun-native APIs) are there when you want them.
  • Zig for the hot paths. The runtime leans on Zig's explicit control over memory and syscalls for its speed claims.

Limitations

  • Node compatibility isn't 100% — exotic native modules and edge-case APIs can still bite.
  • The ecosystem (hosting, tooling integrations) assumes Node first; Bun second.

The AI pair programmer that started it all.

Copilot pioneered AI-assisted coding at scale: inline completions trained on public code, now expanded into chat, agent mode, and code review. The baseline every other tool gets measured against.
