Ghost
Independent technology for modern publishing.
What it does
Why it matters
Publishing software bifurcated into ad-driven platforms and bloated page builders. Ghost took a third path: open source, non-profit owned, sustainably funded by hosting revenue. A decade in, it's still fast, still focused, and still independent — proof that the business model is an engineering decision.
Engineering notes
- Non-profit ownership. The Ghost Foundation can't be acquired or IPO'd — the incentive structure is baked into the legal entity.
- Editor-first. The Koenig editor treats writing as the core interaction, not an afterthought bolted onto a page builder.
- Memberships and newsletters native. Paid subscriptions and email delivery built in, so publishers aren't duct-taping five services together.
Limitations
- It's a publishing platform, not a general CMS — complex content modeling belongs elsewhere.
- Self-hosting is real work (Node, MySQL, mail config); the hosted version is the smooth path.

Bun
An all-in-one JavaScript runtime, bundler, test runner, and package manager.
Bun collapsed the Node.js toolchain — runtime, transpiler, bundler, test runner, package manager — into a single Zig binary that's dramatically faster at nearly everything. Cohesion as a performance strategy.
Claude Code
Anthropic's agentic coding tool that works in your terminal.
Claude Code brought the agent loop to the command line: it reads your codebase, plans changes, runs commands, and iterates — with you directing, not typing. The reference implementation of terminal-native AI engineering.
Cursor
The AI-first code editor, forked from VS Code.
Cursor took VS Code's familiar surface and rebuilt the AI integration underneath: tab completion that predicts your next edit, a composer for multi-file changes, and agent mode that runs terminal commands.
